Vedic Maths Sutras

Updated: Jun 22

The word "Ved" means knowledge, derived from the root word "vid," which signifies knowing without any limits. Vedic Maths originates from India's Vedic tradition and was developed by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha in the early decades of the 20th century.

The Vedas are the oldest recorded repository of human experience and knowledge, transmitted orally for generations and written down nearly 5,000 years ago. The texts cover various branches of knowledge, including medicine, architecture, astronomy, and mathematics. Vedic Mathematics is based on 16 fundamental sutras or aphorisms related to arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.

The 16 basic sutras, or "word formulas," constitute an ancient but straightforward system of mental one-line arithmetic that was extensively used by Hindus over 2,500 years ago. All Vedic Mathematics is founded on the understanding of unity consciousness, utilizing processes or numerical foundations that align with it.

Vedic Mathematics is an ancient Indian mathematical system revitalized by Jagadguru Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha. It comprises 16 main sutras and 13 sub-sutras. The methods of Vedic Mathematics are extremely simple, intuitive, and quick, making problem-solving efficient. These techniques find application in various areas of mathematics, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus.

The book authored by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha in 1965 presents alternative and concise methods for arithmetic calculations. Since its publication, the popularity of Vedic Mathematics has grown globally, and it is now being taught and learned worldwide.

What sets Vedic Mathematics apart is its application of sutras across different mathematical domains, making it possible to solve complex mathematical problems easily. Here are some examples:

1. Arithmetic: Vedic Mathematics sutras aid in simplifying and expediting arithmetic calculations.

2. Algebra: The sutras are useful in solving algebraic problems.

3. Geometry and Calculus: Vedic Mathematics sutras are also beneficial in solving geometry and calculus problems.

4. Squares and Cubes: Some Vedic Mathematics sutras are specifically useful for finding squares and cubes.

In all these areas, using the sutras of Vedic Mathematics simplifies and expedites the process of solving mathematical problems, making it accessible and useful for students, teachers, and parents alike.
